Grevy's zebra is an herbivorous grazer adapted to arid and semi-arid environments. They primarily feed on grasses but may also consume leaves, bark and herbs when grass is scarce. Their feeding behaviour is influenced by the seasonal availability of vegetation. The elongated skull has a long rostrum to accommodate many teeth. It has large nasal passages, which probably aid thermoregulation and olfaction. The orbits are positioned laterally and provide a wide field of vision that is important for detecting predators. The dentition is adapted for grazing. The incisors are used for clipping grass close to the ground. Canines are present but are small and more developed in males. The premolars and molars are high-crowned (hypsodont) and have complex enamel folds for grinding tough plant material. 44 teeth. Dental formula: I 3/3 C 1/1 P 3/3 M 3/3.
